Rose Bent – Crimson Skies

When you hear a new artists classifying usually comes to mind but Rose Bent is Portland’s version of what? Made you think for a second, as female rap groups are pretty rare when you really put your mind to it. While the cliché female of the click or solo female rappers is more active these days makes you wonder why there are not more female groups. Could be a catty-ness of various issues but no matter as the trio made up of Jacque formerly J-Kronic, Kheoshi (Lady Trinity), and Rose City Miss Chief make things work. Backwards in a sense these three have already released a debut album back in 2010 with the latest offering a mixtape called “Crimson Skies”. Eye candy aside being a female rapper as with just being a female in general comes with a lot of double standards. As if hip hop is not already a up hill battle imagine having to show and prove your every move in a industry that just happens to be dominated by males. Your songs have to be that much better and rhymes that much doper, well for those who try to do more than sell their sexuality at least. Rose Bent is not innocent in this realm either but as forgivable and supportive as women can be for men doing the same its only right for the ladies to have a voice. Minus the lovey dovey-ness, sexisms, and mild freakiness the ladies have voices of formulated hip hop with a show out ability of creative zaniness which shows togetherness when they make music. Hosting duties are provided by DJ Sneakers and Infinit Rakz with a few features from Ariano, Zita, Teddy Lokc, Juma Blaq, plus Mighty.

Empathy Records – Soul Of Seattle Compilation

The battle royal of thinking you know what is going to elevate a region musically is always the keynote of expression especially in that of limited success. Rappers are rampant in the region and frankly it’s becoming less of a forte with more of affluence of disinterested fans. Honing vocal talent and being able to sing on the contrary takes actual skill which X’s out a lot of the hobbyist’s. Why nobody thought to do this sooner is already at a loss but Empathy Records has lobbied together some of Seattle’s best for their debut release “Soul Of Seattle”. A compilation of the city and surrounding areas best R&B/Soul artists really is a no brainer because the talent level is attainably high even when compared nationally. The album almost features like a showcase with most artists making double appearances and by far no shortage of contemporary, classic, and soulful R&B tunes. Dually this is a great first effort from Empathy as the oblivious will realize that this region really is talented and for those who are already fans they get a share of their favorite artists plus a chance to learn about some new ones. Sheena G – The First Class

Sheena G’s music is best described as a combination of Fusion Urbana, Reggaeton, and Hip-Hop, all with a distinct Latin flavor. When asked about the title of her album, Sheena G explains the double meaning: “It’s first class because I remain a student, and this is my first of many albums. But also we put everything into the quality of this album; the musicians, the studio, and all the marketing is first class.” The First Class is being released by SGM Records. The First Class is a record that celebrates the power of women everywhere. Take track 4, Alegria (Happiness). “It’s about feeling stuck, and finally through it all being able to move on and feel free. This song pertains to love, changing careers; any real issue that requires you to let go.” Then there are fast paced Zumba and dance club favorites, like boom boom boom, which translates simply, “get close to me when you feel boom boom boom.” Sheena G is a powerful and creative American/Latina woman with business savvy to boot. She is a natural born leader, and credits both her El Salvadoran mother and her German father for her drive. Shortly after being born in Portland, OR, Sheena moved to El Salvador, attending La Escuela Americana and enjoying the Central American lifestyle. Eventually her family was forced to move back to the states. Upon arriving in America when Sheena was just 11, she suffered a life threatening sickness: Kawasaki disease. The experience changed Sheena forever, and she vowed to “never give up on living life to the fullest.” Even during high school, Sheena was starting her own ventures. After dancing and modeling for local magazines, Sheena opened a flower shop and an espresso stand, and by early 2000’s she had a successful chain of Clubs in Portland. In 2009 she released a track with E40 called Smell the Money, her anthem to the women of the Night, and in 2010 she released a mix tape entitled The G-Files. In 2012 she is scheduled to release her Debut Spanglish Urban Fusion Album “The First Class”. This album is sure to open up the marketplace allowing room for a all new sound for the new growing spanglish Urban Latino audience. Parker & Lace Cadence – Imagination EP

Collaborating on each others albums is one thing but when talented artists get together to do whole projects it always sparks some curiosity. Lace Cadence has always been dope since his early days up to the group days with Clockwork. His association with a track or project means good things whether its rapping, vocals, or production side of things. Parker is most known for his work with the group SOTA commanding the boards in the sense of engineering and producing. As the rapper Parker wont overly impress or outshine the competition which works in his case as he is trying to make hit songs not be the lyrical miracle. Members Only who has worked with several artists to release projects over the past few years makes it happen it again with Parker & Lace Cadence’s “Imagination” EP. Short at only five tracks the EP is filled with mood setters that kind of give off that lounge-esque feel, mildly clubby with the nightlife references but in a more relaxing tone. You can grab the project for a few bucks on bandcamp!

While its not a new solo album Choklate is back with new music to celebrate the holiday’s with “Fah La La La La The Christmas” EP. Becoming somewhat traditional over the years to see artists touch base on what can be considered most peoples favorite time of the year. Embodying everything that Christmas is Choklate vocalizes the best qualities of giving, togetherness, even adding some comedic effect with “Santa Sucks”. Easily admirable is the fact Choklate has always had substantial material and never took the easy cliché route of being your typical R&B songstress.
