Shaprece – Molting EP

Shaprece is back! Always liked her on guest appearances and she also dropped a short EP a few years back called “Scatterbrain”. Since then it has been promise of a album but it still has yet to arrive. In the meantime Shaprece has hooked up with Noisetrade to release the “Molting EP”. It is only six songs but should give you a direction of what Shaprece is heading towards sound wise in the future. She does a great job of being able to mix soul into a electronic R&B sound. No features besides a Blue Sky Black Death Remix on the last track.

Dreams Aren’t Free what a apt title eRok chooses for a EP that applies to life and the passions that come along with it. eRok – King

Singers are center stage these days with reality TV always donning a new show to showcase the talent across the nation. Many can sing which is what we now know but what separates anyone in any genre goes beyond just the skill itself. Doubtful anyone would say any region is blanketed by R&B talent but the Northwest is pretty slim pickens especially when it comes to full length releases. eRok is one of the few who can add his mark to those who have put together a full length album as “King” is his introduction into the music world. Portland based eRok has a easy versus hard dilemma as most singers do being that he has a nice voice that upholds the easiness of a listeners ear but does that translate into good songs? The album stays safe for the most part over twelve tracks eRok keeps things contemporary with a flair of pop and a pinch of the old school. Though every genre has its gimmicky artists in R&B it stays a bit more in the truth lane by being vividly personal. eRok himself crosses over for a song or two but in easy lament the album stays high on all facets of relationships via love, heartbreak, physical, or emotional. The best quality in listening to the majority of this album is the ability to relate or least understand a point of view that any given song is trying to express. Sometimes just saying something is good is enough and while we are all critics the overall sense is potential fans will find some gratification in some part of this debut album from eRok.

Nerdy Boy Jr – Nerd Star

Association is a underutilized term in music today but ideally it really is what drives a fan to a particular artist. Not to discredit the music as it plays a integral part but gaining a fanbase past a song or two takes some allurement into believing what that artist is all about. If it was all about talent music would be stacked like the NFL in wealth of millionaires but instead it’s becoming a business of timing. A new start or a re-invention is sometimes the best answer especially if something is not working, ask 2Chainz! Gimmicky as anything can be if you believe and get others to believe as well it can work. The artist that no longer wants to be Tap Tap now becomes redefined as Nerdy Boy Junior. Light spots of success under the old moniker and nowhere near a bad artist just more stringent on striving to pop off a hit song instead of building properly. So with no further delay the legacy of Nerdy starts with the release of his first mixtape “Nerd Star” which is in association with the musical acumen DJ Phinisey. Nerdy has been rapping for awhile so he’s composed and polished enough as a rapper where he just has to focus on making quality music. Was not so long ago that being a Nerd per say was seen as no way of being cool but with a certain steez attached to it can be flipped into a complete 180 these days. That stigma plays well with the Nerd movement Nerdy is trying to get across and the music is a stepped up formula of before but better. It’s a fine blend of pop rap that could find success in various formats other than just being straight forward. The majority is feel good even when Nerdy gets personal the songs stay positive and more uplifting if anything. It’s a better time for music in the Northwest where music like this could find more fans regionally and outside the region we are always a step behind so those partial should have some good summer music. Nerdy just needs to find a way to push his movement and give his fans a name.

Nerdy Boy Jr – Sky High

Its all kinds of variations of what fans are classifying as pop rap but the fact no one can deny is it rules the radio air waves. Often frowned upon especially in the northwest simply because its noted as following the trend instead of having any originality. What many fail to realize is we need acts of all kinds to be coming out of the northwest no matter the music but instead to be successful to carry on for future artists success. Nerdy Boy Jr is a new name but a familiar face when it comes to Northwest music as it’s a recent name change from the artist formerly known as Tap Tap. After several albums with Lynx Records Nerdy has evolved himself as an artist and taken his drive for success to his own independency of making hit records. Always known for having a mainstream style Nerdy has always tried to make comparable music to that of current trends in hopes of putting the Northwest on and his first hit single under the new moniker is the radio ready hit “Sky High” featuring singer Taylor Nicole.

Sheena G – The First Class

Sheena G’s music is best described as a combination of Fusion Urbana, Reggaeton, and Hip-Hop, all with a distinct Latin flavor. When asked about the title of her album, Sheena G explains the double meaning: “It’s first class because I remain a student, and this is my first of many albums. But also we put everything into the quality of this album; the musicians, the studio, and all the marketing is first class.” The First Class is being released by SGM Records. The First Class is a record that celebrates the power of women everywhere. Take track 4, Alegria (Happiness). “It’s about feeling stuck, and finally through it all being able to move on and feel free. This song pertains to love, changing careers; any real issue that requires you to let go.” Then there are fast paced Zumba and dance club favorites, like boom boom boom, which translates simply, “get close to me when you feel boom boom boom.” Sheena G is a powerful and creative American/Latina woman with business savvy to boot. She is a natural born leader, and credits both her El Salvadoran mother and her German father for her drive. Shortly after being born in Portland, OR, Sheena moved to El Salvador, attending La Escuela Americana and enjoying the Central American lifestyle. Eventually her family was forced to move back to the states. Upon arriving in America when Sheena was just 11, she suffered a life threatening sickness: Kawasaki disease. The experience changed Sheena forever, and she vowed to “never give up on living life to the fullest.” Even during high school, Sheena was starting her own ventures. After dancing and modeling for local magazines, Sheena opened a flower shop and an espresso stand, and by early 2000’s she had a successful chain of Clubs in Portland. In 2009 she released a track with E40 called Smell the Money, her anthem to the women of the Night, and in 2010 she released a mix tape entitled The G-Files. In 2012 she is scheduled to release her Debut Spanglish Urban Fusion Album “The First Class”. Parker & Lace Cadence – Imagination EP

Collaborating on each others albums is one thing but when talented artists get together to do whole projects it always sparks some curiosity. Lace Cadence has always been dope since his early days up to the group days with Clockwork. His association with a track or project means good things whether its rapping, vocals, or production side of things. Parker is most known for his work with the group SOTA commanding the boards in the sense of engineering and producing. As the rapper Parker wont overly impress or outshine the competition which works in his case as he is trying to make hit songs not be the lyrical miracle. Members Only who has worked with several artists to release projects over the past few years makes it happen it again with Parker & Lace Cadence’s “Imagination” EP. Short at only five tracks the EP is filled with mood setters that kind of give off that lounge-esque feel, mildly clubby with the nightlife references but in a more relaxing tone. You can grab the project for a few bucks on bandcamp!

Warm Gun – Nocturnal (Summers Over)

To grow old is to see change and the stereotype of what the common successful artist is suppose to be, suppose to look like, suppose to sound like, is something we will never be able to predict. Warm Gun is a talent and that encompasses the word in a vast sense. It used to be you could do one thing good and be praised for it but these days simply saying you rap is a near worthless trade. The scary thought is the artists of tomorrow are going to be considered superhuman prototypes of what we know today and Warm Gun is a early spectacle. Now on his third project “Nocturnal (Summers Over)” you get to hear him at his best yet showcasing those various skills of rapping, singing, producing, and most important his song writing ability. Warm is a smart artist and barefaced admittance to knowing his strengths vs weaknesses is what sets him apart. Like most rappers today decent is a honest rating for Warm Gun but his ability to take on a beat as if it were a magnum opus along with his song writing make for a smooth effortless listening experience. Summers Over overall is a themed project that seems to be a culmination storyboard of past summer occurrences for Warm Gun and is chronicled well throughout the thirteen tracks. Pursuance is all Warm Gun needs if he ever tends to favor some sort of career musically but for now enjoy the release which gets assistance from other great artists such as Parker, Props, International Mo B, Eliot Jones, and Hailey Hoff.
