Sam LaChow – Huckleberry

Easy to say “Huckleberry” is an anticipated album from Sam Lachow. It’s his second full length project and he managed to get nearly 20 grand in support via Kickstarter. Very impressive kind of reminds you of another artist from Seattle before things really skyrocketed. Music runs deep for Sam who has been at it awhile even before being solo. What Sam does well and it showcases well on this new album is his ability to surround himself with talent. Whether its collaboration or the production behind the music. You have a lot of live instrumentation and looking at the credits you can tell a lot of work went into the boards for the production of “Huckleberry”. No best rapper arguments here and I’m sure Sam wouldn’t disagree but his understanding of music would surpass many. Try not to classify Sam as a rapper strictly because he is more than that. He is an artist and understands the concept of music in making it appeal to a listeners ear. Very easy to say Sam Lachow is part of the backbone that is going to make the future of Seattle Music.

Shaprece – Molting EP

Shaprece is back! Always liked her on guest appearances and she also dropped a short EP a few years back called “Scatterbrain”. Since then it has been promise of a album but it still has yet to arrive. In the meantime Shaprece has hooked up with Noisetrade to release the “Molting EP”. It is only six songs but should give you a direction of what Shaprece is heading towards sound wise in the future. She does a great job of being able to mix soul into a electronic R&B sound. No features besides a Blue Sky Black Death Remix on the last track.

Calvin Valentine x DJ FlipFlop – SLWDWN94

And it don’t stop, not for Calvin Valentine that is. Just recently dropping a project with TxE Calvin now releases a five song special titled “SLWDWN94” for V-Day. With the last name Valentine go figure but it has been a little while since we have heard him on the raps. He takes a break from producing for the most part with DJ Flip Flop providing the production on every track. This is just another notch in a long belt for DJ Flip Flop as his discography of work with people is long over the years. Calvin’s smooth flow is always easy to vibe too and his beat selection is always grade-A. DJ Flip Flop keeps the soul on every beat with a lot of dope samples which makes the project have its own vibe versus being cliché expectance. Only feature comes from Sam Trump.

Luck-One – King Of The North West II: Curse Of The Pharaoh

Having maximized what the Northwest had to offer as far as opportunity and accomplishments Luck-One moved to New York to further his career as an artist. It seems to be moving in a positive direction as he has seen more opportunity come his way in all forms. Luck-One is coming with that Richard Sherman bravado and he has no qualms about telling you he is the King of The Northwest. He says he is one of the hardest working artists and he just continues to back those words. It has been one of the longer stretches for Luck-One as far as new music but 2014 brings “King Of The North West II: Curse Of The Pharaoh”. Geographically things have changed but Luck still reps for the home crowd and continues to make his own brand of music. It has pretty much been like that since day one when he dropped his first album which was a local favorite. First thing people try to do is throw comparisons and Luck might have similarities but in whole he is still fresh in consideration to what is currently out. Substance rules and Luck-One does not refrain from talking about relatable issues on this release. That might be his strength in the ability to stay lyrical but add that musical addition and not go over a listeners head. No shortage of music here as you have twenty tracks to enjoy. Noted that the project was said to be slimmed down from a hundred songs which means no worries of upcoming music from Luck-One. No shortage of producers on the project either with beats from Shenequa, Mike Mo, Dekk, Reignstate, Trox, Dead Giveaway Beats, King Form, Tmak, Stewart Villain, Produktive, Soul Chef, Goodwill, Samarei, Dupre, and ODC.

Steezie Nasa – Lucky 7

Moor Gang is that click right now and since they are so deep you never have to wait too long for a new release. Steezie Nasa drops his latest project “Lucky 7” with seven brand new tracks with only one feature coming from UDF’s Caz Green. Steezie was one of the initial gunners for the Moor’s which has now grown heavy in support and has many saying they are up next. Steezie always offered a cocky brashness to himself musically which is what a lot of young artists have. Exemplifying a newer Seattle and being able to back it up skillfully. Instead of a crew sounding the same they have a movement with everyone just doing them but being unified at the end of the day.

iLL Chris – iLL Chris Project

Over the years you start to grow as an artist so with time comes change. We have all come to know the artist that runs by Logics and then the more google friendly AyeLogics due to his relentless music hustle. He stays busy with projects, shows, promotions, clothing, and just about anything in hand that involves the business of making his brand stronger. Recently stating that Logics is no more and now in comes iLL Chris which is the new moniker in which he feels better represents who he is as an artist today. No longer wanting to be held in the box and paying ode to when ILL was in he brings his latest album the “iLL Chris Project”. In truth as a rapper iLL Chris is not an artist who would correlate to what Jordan was to the NBA. In reality not many are because that means you would be once in a lifetime. Not something we see often but what we do see is a lot of artists working hard to legitimatize themselves at that next level. Any artist can be one song away and iLL Chris is no different. This latest effort continues to show how he stays with the times and has the ability to make some good songs no matter the trend. Production wise this is his best effort in that the beats really fit his style versus just being good beats to rap on. No matter what anyone actually thinks in the end iLL Chris will be further ahead than most simply due to his work ethic. You can get the project as a freebie or support it on I-Tunes. Production is courtesy of Bravo Domo, The Awesome Sound, Mike Weed, Stewart Villian, DJ El Grande, Romelle Green, Carl D, Dupree, Like Of Pac Div, and J. Purganans.

Desta – Have Some EP

The Northwest music scene is flourishing these days and the amount of artists with potential is growing. You have a platinum artist once again from the state of Washington, artists are signing record deals, and to top it off the amount of artists with a buzz is higher than ever. Locally things are still hard in many ways but those willing to grind a name out for themselves are welcomed additions. The R&B scene in the northwest is still a niche market as in it is small so the opportunity is large. Desta is a new artist who has Cali roots but now calls the Northwest her home. Tacoma based the singer/model is debuting herself to the world with her first EP “Have Some”. It spawns only five tracks with two features from Tacoma veterans in Leezy Soprano and Awall2Piece. Part of the Go Getta Music family the project is produced entirely by Jay Bellamy.  Some may know him as a pioneer in the Tacoma music scene as he was one of the first rappers/producers from Tacoma to put product out. Jay released a few rap projects and some gospel albums more recently. Now more focused on producing, writing, and developing the talent Desta gets his aided experience for her first release. Desta the singer parlays a strong but subtle voice that is very reminiscent of older R&B. Points awarded already as most would agree that was the best age for R&B. Desta’s voice which is most important being a singer is soothing and alluring when needed. If content defines the singer Desta stays mature covering topics females can relate to. Nitpicking you will hear some flaws but that is expected for a debut release. Perfection does not happen overnight and Desta sounds more ahead than behind.
