Desta – Have Some EP

The Northwest music scene is flourishing these days and the amount of artists with potential is growing. You have a platinum artist once again from the state of Washington, artists are signing record deals, and to top it off the amount of artists with a buzz is higher than ever. Locally things are still hard in many ways but those willing to grind a name out for themselves are welcomed additions. The R&B scene in the northwest is still a niche market as in it is small so the opportunity is large. Desta is a new artist who has Cali roots but now calls the Northwest her home. Tacoma based the singer/model is debuting herself to the world with her first EP “Have Some”. It spawns only five tracks with two features from Tacoma veterans in Leezy Soprano and Awall2Piece. Part of the Go Getta Music family the project is produced entirely by Jay Bellamy.  Some may know him as a pioneer in the Tacoma music scene as he was one of the first rappers/producers from Tacoma to put product out. Jay released a few rap projects and some gospel albums more recently. Now more focused on producing, writing, and developing the talent Desta gets his aided experience for her first release. Desta the singer parlays a strong but subtle voice that is very reminiscent of older R&B. Points awarded already as most would agree that was the best age for R&B. Desta’s voice which is most important being a singer is soothing and alluring when needed. If content defines the singer Desta stays mature covering topics females can relate to. Nitpicking you will hear some flaws but that is expected for a debut release. Perfection does not happen overnight and Desta sounds more ahead than behind.

Raz Simone – Solomon Samuel Simone

Raz Simone is a hip-hop artist from Seattle, Washington. His inspiration stems from his diverse life, as opposed to any musical predecessors. Growing up Raz did not listen to any music. It wasn’t until he started writing poetry, then speaking his powerful words over movie scores that he realized he was rapping. Mixing creative foresight with entrepreneurial spirit, Raz produces, raps, sings, designs graphics and directs videos all under his independent label, Black Umbrella. In 2012 Raz partnered with Sam Lachow to create a five track EP called ‘5 Good Reasons’. The positive reception of the project landed both artists on tour at the start of 2013. Raz then followed up in March, with his debut solo EP, Solomon Samuel Simone. The momentum gained from those 2 projects was abruptly halted when Raz caught a gun charge while performing in New York City for possession of a firearm that he legally owned. After dealing with the effects of the situation through out all of 2013, all charges were recently dropped and Raz has prepared his return to music. In early 2014 he will release his next project, Cognitive Dissonance: Part One. Embodying the passion and frustration that comes with the cognitive response of two conflicting ideas, this project takes listeners deep inside the mind of Raz at some of his most introspective, inspiring, and darkest points.

Choklate – Fly EP

Chocolate itself is a guilty pleasure but Choklate the artist is not something you want to hide. It is good to see the path she has carved for herself as an artist. Especially as someone who has been following her since her early days of just lending her talents to other artist’s projects. Her last release was something for the Holidays so it is good to see “Fly” released with new music even though it’s just an EP. Seems to be the new formula for a lot of artists to release new music quicker versus the long wait a fully prepared album can take. Five songs in total and two of them featuring solidified names in Musiq Soulchild and Phonte. Choklate has been compared to a lot of other successful artists and without question she is just as good as many of those artists. Localities may give her an edge like their favorite sports team but though maybe not as shined upon as others her success speaks for itself. Choklate’s soulful voice does not let down with “Fly”. Her ability to sing with connection through words will having you feeling good and will win new fans over. You can grab the EP on I-Tunes.

AyeLogics – Odd Man Out

Sneaker Head, urban fashionista turned Recording artist AyeLogics, releases his 2nd full-length album, accurately titled Odd Man Out. This is the artist’s 6th release, following a series of EPs (Problematic, Vintage Flow, Live From The Sin, and Almost Varsity), his only other album in 2007 was titled When All Else Fails. Born in Oklahoma and having lived in Virginia Beach, VA, as well as close to 10 other cities as a military brat, AyeLogics began to hone his rap skills while in high school in Las Vegas as a battle rapper. After joining the Air Force and relocating to Seattle, he took rap more seriously when he found himself surrounded by other rising hip-hop artists like Macklemore, the now platinum Seattle artist. Being an Asian rapper, has always caused AyeLogics to stand out. Whether it’s on a basketball court, in a cypher, while shopping for vintage Sonics gear, gold jewelry, or rare sneakers, He’s always been a rarity. This inspired the title of the album, Odd Man Out. Since May of 2012, AyeLogics has been working to put together this project, which he calls “an eccentric collection of rhymes and beats” which are very much a representation if himself, his style, and his art. The album features production from Nick Bangerz (credits: Jabawockees, Rihanna), Mike Weed, Chinky P (credits: T.I., G-Unit, Bun B), D. Landski, Black Key Cartel, and J Purganans. Featured artist are Sir Michael Rocks (also known as Mikey Rocks of The Cool Kids), Bay-area favorite Mistah Fab, as well as fellow Seattle up-and-comers Nacho Picasso and Eighty4 Fly.

eRok – Dreams Aren’t Free

Dreams Aren’t Free what a apt title eRok chooses for a EP that applies to life and the passions that come along with it. A sleeper pick for sure eRok is that artist in your city you may not even know is making good music and then one day he could just be all over the radio. This follows up his debut album “King” which seemed to be a lifetime in the making but as they say you cant rush perfection. Ironically this is a completely free project as eRok wants to give back but for those die hard fans you can also purchase the project on all digital retailers. To keep it simple eRok is a lady pleaser, if you want to impress your woman with some new music throw this on. Sounding like one of those cheesy all in one compilation infomercials eRok really does it all from Love making music, ballads, heartbreak, to pop songs you can dance to. Click, download, listen, it is five songs all produced by Sunny Beatz.
