Minus 20 – Its Goin Down Up Here

Not much is known about Alaska besides the simple facts like it was one of the last inducted states, its cold, and it snows. No matter what anyone says it goes down anywhere and due to population the rap scene may not be as rampant in Alaska as other regions but the few who are pro-active seem to make solid music. Minus 20 is one of the first artists releasing a album on Frostbite Records based out of Anchorage. The albums title “It’s Goin Down Up Here” seems like a call out to those who probably say they got rappers in Alaska? As menial as most perceive a good majority of the music coming from Alaska is street based which could be primarily due to the major drug scene which many may not know about firsthand unless you’ve been there. Minus 20 like many other Alaska based artists does not have a signature sound to call his own but jumbles a variety of the better current influences. Some would call it Alaska’s own form of trap music with its own instances of street stories and swagger.

Mannish Da Jula – A.O.N. (All Or Nothing)

Sure its debatable is Alaska part of the Northwest or not? Being the northern most point on the west coast it could easily be labeled the pinnacle of the Northwest. Rap wise most remember BET uncut hero Joker the Bailbondsman who is sort of a cult video phenomenon but the wonder had to be is there any other artists coming from the frigid state? Laughable to most taking on the challenge and representing with nothing but pride Mannish Da Jula is intent on making a name for himself. While the thought may be its nothing but snow and wildlife in Alaska it definitely has its own griminess which many might not repute unless you experience it first hand. After a couple of mixtapes Mannish is presenting his first official real project “A.O.N. (All Or Nothing)” a compilation of tracks that will serve as a teaser until he releases his debut solo album. What is becoming a steady rise of artists from smaller markets Mannish’s strongest ability is his voice which is multifaceted and could easily blend in any market. Like much of the Northwest there is no set sound as of yet but like his style Mannish shows how developed he is while doing a good job of spreading the wealth as you hear southern, west, and east coast influences. While in the right hands his music does its justice Mannish’s ability not to founder on the business side of things has helped solidify some solid press. You can already see interviews with Murder Dog, Coast 2 Coast Magazine, and catch his music on various internet outlets. Serving up a unfamiliar trend Mannish keeps consistency working with only a few producers which include Rawbeatzz, K-Salaam/Beatnick, and Auditory. The album is available for purchase on I-Tunes.

Tha Northwest Street – Volume 1

Rap has always identified itself at a street level and though the degrees of it vary a lot of it originates from the bottom before it rises to the top. The Northwest at one time was full of hardcore hip hop and what many label as gangsta rap but over the years it has kind of weaned itself off to a moderate level due to the success of pop rap. Even though the tables have turned there is still a considerable amount of artists releasing music that many would not deem radio worthy. Not a worry because many artists who never receive radio play still have a solid fanbase due to newer outlets and forms of promotion. Tha Northwest Street Volume 1 is the first of many upcoming volumes that will feature artists with a street edge to their music. We are currently taking submissions for Volume 2 which will be released in the very near future, you can email submissions to thanorthwest@gmail.com along with information about the song.

Tha Northwest Radio – Volume 2

Tha Northwest Radio Volume 1 was a good start in helping acknowledge artists who can compete with artists from other regions with the ability to make radio ready music. The basic concept of making artists and fans aware of what is going on in their region is of the utmost importance.
