Every artist has his preferred medium. Cassow paints his pictures with words, flavoring his vivid tales with clever euphemisms and exceptional timing. Much like the great painter from which his name was derived, Cassow has demonstrated extraordinary talent at a young age. Fellow Northwest rap artist Luck-One went as far as to call Cassow “the future of Portland rap”… and rightly so.Far from flashy, yet remarkably confident, Cassow is not your average rap guy. Not one to focus on his hardships, he often spends his free time pushing and pulling breaths through the reeds of his beloved harmonica. Again, not your typical rap guy… but a relationship may in fact exist between his remarkably effortless rap style and his atypical harmonica playing. Pulmonary specialists have long recognized the use of the harmonica as one of the best possible respiratory exercises as the action of inhaling and exhaling forcefully against resistance increases both diaphragm strength and lung volume. Imagine that.
Perhaps the future Bob Dylan of hip-hop, Cassow brings intellectual ambition and an inventive flair to the popular hip-hop genre. Raised primarily by his grandparents in the rough-and-tumble heart of inner-Northeast Portland, it is no surprise that the kid possesses an old soul.As he put it, “I’m not like other artists that just smoke weed and get tattoos. I’m more of the working on my craft, playing my harmonica, or going to the gym to work out type… The tattoo and heavy marijuana stage will soon fade.” When it does, Cassow will still be here with his slick flow and smooth harmonica, illustrating stories for all who will listen. Never the quitting type, his life has been filled with adversity. Despite troubled parents, the devastating loss of his grandfather, and even homelessness, Cassow proudly graduated high school and poured his pain – plus everything else he had left – into his craft. The result has been undeniably amazing music and a promising young rap career.
In 2010, the 19-year old’s debut record, Mixtape Off To Mars, was met with glowing national feedback – not an easy feat for a relatively unknown rapper from a small market city. Hosted by DJ Ill Will, the 18-track mixtape showcases the youthful emcee’s expressive lyrical flexibility over a variety of already successful instrumentals and continues to garner attention from as far as London and Africa. His music is played regularly on Portland’s Jammin’ 107.5 and can be found on-line on various major sites, including datpiff.com, worldstarhiphop.com and hotnewhiphop.com. His upcoming project Head of Class is shaping up to be even more compelling than his last; the new record is scheduled to drop in the Fall of 2011.AddictedToReal.com referred to Cassow as a “new force from the Northwest” and they are absolutely correct. Only through art can one create beauty from tragedy. To quote Pablo Picasso, “Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth.” Like his namesake, Cassow has mastered this ability to convey his pain – frankly and truthfully – through the creation of captivating, yet often confusing, artistic works. Creating timeless music that allows others to understand his story remains his top priority. Now all you need to do is listen!
