Proh Mic – Catch A Pisces

Some artists leave you wondering if they were born in a time period different from their own. Proh Mic gives the distinct impression that he was born in another place entirely. While his birth certificate points to West Seattle, Washington as his plae of origin, his musi suggest that he is other worldly. With a style that combines elements of jazz, funk, soul, and hip hop, Proh Mic has established himself as an artist with distinct sensibility for the lost art of making music. The offspring of Brion James, a guitarists from the 80’s funk rock band “The Dan Reed Network”, Proh Mic and his music have shared an intimate relationship for much of his life. Recognizing his genetic inheritance, his mother often proclaimed that his destiny was to become a professional musician like his father. In fact, it was his mothers proclamation that he would later modify and adopt as his stage name (Proh Mic).

His destiny foretold, Proh Mic, set out on a journey that would begin with years of training on piano and violin, before later expanding to percussion rhythms and keys, both of which are featured heavily in his production. In addition to his professional training, Proh Mic, who considers himself an eternal pupil of music, gained valuable lessons observing the careers of his real life influences, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. Through the music of Stevie Wonder, Proh Mic developed a knack for song arrangements. And it was the music of Michael Jackson that taught Proh Mic how to reflect himself in his music. Having watched his father onstage for years, Proh Mic’s own desire to perform began to fester in 1983 after watching Michael Jackson’s iconic performance on the historic “Motown 25” television broadcast. This desire was later solidified after viewing another legendary on screen performance. Run DMC’s concert scene from the genre building hip hop film Krush Groove.

Proh Mic has lent his elector inspired brand of soulful funk music to several stalwarts on the present day independent music scene. His list of collaborators ranges from past greats such as X Clan to emergin talents including Blac Spade, Coultrain, Dam Funk, Strange Fruit Project, and Blu. In 2008, along with BlackSpade, and Ced No, Proh Mic formed the trio known as Hawthrone Headhunters. The following year they released a self titled EP which he produced three of the five songs. Since then Proh Mic has kept himself extremely busy, producing and independently relasing 3 free hip hop albums-Rawsome, Cheesecake, and Catch A Pisces. HE has also leaked five volumes of an instrumental beat tape series titled “Nice 2 Beat U”. He teamed up with former Pharcyde member Uncle Imani, producing seen tracks on Uncle Imani’s Blackdust project. Also in the queue is 40 Acres and collaborative project with label mate Cap D. In addition to his album projects, Proh Mic has also earned commercial credits, producing music for Army and Honda Commercials.
