Juma Blaq was raised in Northeast Portland enduring constant ups and downs due to his parents moving constantly which eventually led to life on the streets. For portions of his life being homeless was something not so unfamiliar and the passing of Juma’s father at a young age didn’t make things any easier for the family. Hitting rock bottom is a point Juma never wanted to see again and he promised himself that he would not let misfortunes affect his attitude and who he was. High School was Juma’s first signs of being a leader as he played starting point guard and graduated from Jefferson High in 2003. Everyone has dreams of what they are destined to do and even though Juma excelled at sports his passion had always truly been with music. Juma states “The art of performing is amazing, just listening to music can change a person’s mood, touch their soul, and even leave an everlasting memory”.
Having had music effect him as a person Juma wanted to do the same by touching people in the same way with his music. Touting his music as inspirational hip hop Juma Blaq strives to be a positive role model which kids these days can look up to for the right reasons. Like a student in the classroom Juma indulged himself in knowledge by researching as much as he could about the music industry. “I like to see how the greats became great and I want to be as successful as they are. I try to emulate their promotions and marketing strategies with my own added touches” explains Juma. Dreams and goals is all we can hope for in life and Juma has slowly accomplished a few so far with many more on the checklist to achieve. Having performed in his own hometown Juma has also had the pleasure of doing out of town shows in Vancouver, Chicago, and Redwood City.
For the time being Juma’s only career is my music and full dedication to it is the perfect start. Being a part of a movement called “Tha Union” Juma has work closely on various projects with the imprint and its affiliates over the years but 2011 marks the year of the release of Juma’s latest solo project “Strictly For My City”. The album features Lava, Vocab, Mighty, Roulette Delgato, Portland George, Cool Nutz, A-1, Zito, Wallace, Young Marquis, Rose Bent, Hlafa, Rob Young and many more. The project also features a vast amount of producers with beats from Breaking News, Tommy Boi, Epik The Dawn, DJ Chill, Juma Blaq, Joc Cannon, N8 Beats, Genius Vega, Brave Starr, C Goods, and Dain.
