B.U.D. – Chronic Illness

B.U.D. has grown to truly be one of Seattle’s most captivating speakers.  Whether it’s conversing frankly with a room full of youth about the positive side of staying school and following their dreams, or moving hundreds at one of his concerts, audiences are engrossed by this new artist’s words.  On April 10th, 2010, he delivered his potent and highly anticipated LP, Chronic Illness. “This album displays different levels in my life”, B.U.D. says of his new project.  “I just want to let everyone know I am coming out, and that I am going to answer a lot of questions in the music.  It’s intense and insightful; it’s going to change the view of Seattle hip hop music.  Plus it’s me at my best.”

Chronic Illness’s title is a direct reference to B.U.D.’s goal of having great longevity in the music business- a mentality he feels many artists make the big mistake of overlooking.  It is that type of thinking that gives the album such diversity as B.U.D. made great efforts to create music for everyone. “A lot of current artists have lost the passion for creating timeless music.  I have always been enamored how the likes of Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Run DMC, etc.; all have music that can be played 20 years after it was released yet still have the same effect I strive to be that type of artist.”

One of the albums singles is the club banger “Ice Cold,” a creative glance into the world of beautiful independent woman.  Produced by acclaimed hit maker Kevin Gardner, the jubilation takes us to a place where the only thing more abundant than B.U.D. performing with his limitless flow of rhyme and melody is the ladies he is speaking to! “In so many of my records I’ve crafted that address women, they have always catered to me.  In this particular record, I wanted to show my appreciation and reverse the roles a little.  I tell the ladies don’t worry; the sky is the limit.  No desire is too great.  You are just as valuable as men in this society.”

Chronic Illness’s first street tease, “It Is What It Is,” is the definitive stance of B.U.D.’s declaration as a man undeterred and as an artist unrivaled, as well as an inside view of his comical and creative way of thinking that keeps him at the top of his game despite a few betrayals along the way. “Couldn’t touch me in your lifetime,” the hip hop veterans raps.  “If your style is hollow you should follow my guidelines./You’ll see B.U.D. on the cover of high times./Because off the dro that man flow like a pipeline.” There will never be an obstacle to large for B.U.D. to overcome.  B.U.D. has made a pledge to himself, his family, and all his fans to keep his head held high and persevere through any predicament—whether it be persecution, prosecution or betrayal.

Without exaggeration, “Sound Off,” is a historic moment not just for B.U.D., not just for Seattle or the Puget Sound, but for all of hip hop.  The song is a lyrical collage of metaphors, braggadocio, and style painted by the MC many have named the savior for Seattle hip hop.  B.U.D. and the record’s producer Kyle Daniels each display a cohesiveness and passion to get the Northwest back in the mainstream.  B.U.D. ferociously attacks the bouncy track with brash wordplay showing why he towers over a lot of raps elite. “Get Away” pairs B.U.D.’s almost R&B melodic delivery with bold, but sweet harmonies from local R&B singer Merrydean.   Definitely a tribute to the love and respect for a good relationship shared between a man and a woman.  No matter what stage you are at in life this song is one you can just bump in your ride and feel good!

The roster of producers on the album includes Kevin Gardner, Trevor Gardner, Track Pros, Jae Yoon, and Kyle Daniels among others.  B.U.D. recorded over 30 songs for the album before narrowing it down to the cream of the crop.  “When I make LPs, I get into such a focus you have to drag me out of the studio sometimes.  This is my passion.”
