Dice – Then & Now

Northwest HipHop up-&-comer Dice, (Born Tawnya Leilani Cunningham) has always been surrounded by music. Her mother’s participation in the “Sweet Adeline’s” all women barbershop chorus (her mothers boyfriend a guitar-maker for Ernie Ball, & member of a band himself), was a huge inspiration & influence on the future singer from the very beginning. Speakers, sound boards and guitars were on every wall. Choir and other musical studies were a given even in the very early years of her life.  It was during these years Dice was introduced to HipHop/Rap (late nights sneaking a listen to the local radio station while her mom slept). In 1998, at age 11, Dice’s mother moved them to Yelm, WA: a small town near the state capitol of Olympia with lots of livestock and little going on. Culture shock was an understatement! Nonetheless, it was here Dice would blossom as an artist; penning her first rhyme book in 2004, & making many valuable connections that laid the groundwork for what would later become milestones in her career. One of these milestones occurred in 2007 when Dice, freshly 18, signed with an independent label in Oakland, California.

Sick of the small town she had been stuck in and ready to see something new; Dice packed 2 suitcases, took the $50 she had in pocket, and boarded a plane to the San Francisco Bay Area. She immediately started making her presence known on the local open mic circuit and was soon a regular at several venues; eventually performing at famous bay area events such as the “Haight Street Fair”, and opening shows for bay area music staples such as Knobody (Hieroglyphics Imperium). New Years Eve 2009 brought the release of Dice’s debut solo project, “Then & Now, The Mixtape”. Hosted by DJ RPM… “Then & Now” was a 12 track compilation of unreleased tracks. The mixtape has seen moderate success, currently having sold 2,000+ hard copies independently (in & around WA,OR,& Northern CA), several thousand ring tone downloads, and many thousand more downloads through various mixtape websites. Emerging as one of the Northwest’s most talented artist/performers, Dice has effortlessly grabbed the attention of any & every crowd put in front of her with a mixture of intelligent rhymes, sultry vocals, and surprising soul. In September’09 she would earn the right to add opening for the legendary Hip Hop duo Redman & Method Man to her impressive & ever-growing resume. Dice has also been blessed to open for other respected artists such as Sollilaquists of Sound, Pitbull, & Keith Murray; not to mention local OG’s in the game like Oldominion’s Sleep & Onry Ozzbourne of Grayskul. Currently, Dice is recording and preparing for the release of her sophomore project “The Foundation”, due out in 2010. The Momentum has just begun, & one thing is certain. Dice is definitely on a roll!!!
