Jay Barz – Hunger Pains 2

A lot can be said about the Pacific Northwest, especially when it comes to technology and aerodynamics, but when you mention music and entertainment, most people draw a blank. Some, with good knowledge of the music industry, would mention Quincy Jones, Jimi Hendreix, & Nirvana as far as generes, but could only muster up Sir Mix A Lot for hip hop. “Damn near every region in the US has been covered in this game, but we got a voice out here too. Its untapped and if you ask me,” an optimistic emcee named Jay Barz says. Born and raised in Tacoma, Washington (40 minutes South of Seattle), this young artist has made quite a name for himself in a overvrowded populus of aspiring rap stars on the underground scene.

Take advantage of the internet age and constantly staying in the publics eye, hes single handedly built a cult following in his region with an out of the trunk approach to record sales and opening for a slew of national acts touring in his area. “I opened for Ice Cube, I went from growing up on that’s mans music to sharing a state with him. It was unreal to me at first,” a humble Jay Barz states. With a good amount of ahosws as well as internet popularity (over 120,000 Myspace plays) under his belt, Jay Barz doesn’t just stop there. He also operates his own graphic design business as well as production and promotions. “At the end of the day, if everybody said fuck you for real I can do everything myself. Im a sponge, I soaked game from sitting around in the studio or watching designers at work. This is a new day. You cant just be the rapper anymore.”

But with good music must come the bad and Jay Barz lets it be known on many of his songs with his distate for the current state of rap music. “These motherfucekrs just aint honest a anymore. You don’t have to be from the hood and kill a million people on your record to be considered great. Youd be surprised how many average people can relate to average topics. If I cant be true to myself when I make a song, then there’s no point in making them.” Surrounded by negativity growing up in Tacoma (which had the #1 murder rate in the early 90’s). Jay Barz is no stranger to hate, but being the creative person he is, he took a common phrase associated with him (Fuck Jay Barz) and used it to his advantage. “Controversy sells, Whats one of the most disrespectful things you can say about or to someone? Fuck you, right?

Well here, “Fuck Jay Barz”, I said it for you. “What you gonna say now? We even put it on T-shirts cause its great promo. Whos gonna miss the word FUCK in big letters walking down the streets. Youre gonna read it and then your gonna ask yourself Whos Jay Barz? Haha gotcha!” And the reeling in didn’t stop as the infamous tees becaome a fan favoriate, selling hundreds online and at concerts. Even west coast rapper, Crooked I, is caught hawking one in a video interview on Youtube. As hus buzz continues to grow, Barz shows a determination and hunger with every verse he spits. “I been doubted my entire life so theres nothing you could possibly say or do to stop me. I ben jumped, sucker punched, pistols waved in my face, you name it, over this rap shit, but im still here. This is the one thing in my life that I haven’t quit. Most people wouldn’t expect a short, chubby, red-headed kid to be able to rap but once they hear it, they cant deny it. I had 60 year old white dude that didn’t even like rap become a fan after jumpin offstage.” Well, Jay Barz, keep proving them wrong.
